Understanding the difference between a PDI and an ADI
Driving instructors play a crucial role in ensuring learners not only pass their driving test but also develop the skills and confidence needed to become safe drivers on the road. However, not all driving instructors share the same level of training and certification. In the UK, there are two primary types of driving instructors authorised to provide lessons: Potential Driving Instructors (PDI) and Approved Driving Instructors (ADI).

What is a potential driving instructor (PDI)?
A PDI is a driving instructor in training, someone who has not yet fully qualified as an ADI. To become a PDI, you must pass the first two parts of the ADI test, which assess driving ability and knowledge of the Highway Code. Additionally, PDIs must complete at least 40 hours of training, including 10 hours of in-car practice, before receiving their trainee licence, also known as the “pink badge.”
While PDIs can offer driving lessons, they are only allowed to do so under a trainee licence and must work with an established driving school. The trainee licence is valid for six months, during which PDIs continue to prepare for their final exam to achieve ADI status.
What is an approved driving instructor (ADI)?
An ADI is a fully qualified driving instructor who has passed all three parts of the ADI test, including the Instructional Ability Test, which evaluates their ability to teach learner drivers. Once an instructor has qualified as an ADI and received their “green badge,” they are allowed to operate independently or within a driving school.
Maintaining ADI status requires ongoing professional development, including regular training and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
The instructional ability test (IAT)
The final hurdle for PDIs on their path to becoming ADIs is the Instructional Ability Test (IAT). This assessment evaluates a PDI’s ability to teach learner drivers. To pass, PDIs must demonstrate effective communication, teaching techniques, and adherence to safety standards. The IAT must be completed within six months of obtaining the trainee licence, and if a PDI fails the IAT three times, they must restart their training from scratch.
