The data, compiled from 2.3 million motor claims submitted in the preceding year, reveals a total payout amounting to £9.9 billion. This represents an 18% increase compared to 2022 figures and marks the highest recorded payout since the inception of data collection by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) in 2013.
Soaring repair costs fuel record insurance payouts
The primary driver behind this escalation is attributed to soaring repair costs, which experienced a notable 31% surge from £4.7 billion in 2022 to £6.1 billion last year. Both materials and labour costs witnessed significant upticks of 16% and 15%, respectively, with certain garages reporting an astounding 300% rise in energy costs.
Moreover, payouts pertaining to vehicle theft surged by 23% to £669 million, while courtesy car costs escalated by 35% to £597 million. However, it is noteworthy that personal injury claims experienced a slight downturn, totaling £2.4 billion, marking an 8% decrease from the £2.6 billion recorded in 2022.
Jonathan Fong, ABI’s Manager of General Insurance Policy, underscored the challenges faced by insurers due to sustained cost pressures, particularly the substantial rise in repair costs over the past year. Despite these challenges, insurers remain steadfast in their commitment to offering competitively priced motor insurance.
