Smart Tank by Fleetmaxx Solutions: Leading the way to greener AdBlue production

Jun 10, 2024

Hi, I’m Stephen Buckley, Senior Fleet Analyst at Fleetmaxx Solutions in Burnley. Today, I’m excited to share how our innovative Smart Tank AdBlue telemetry service, powered by our partners, is revolutionising  with greener AdBlue production to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Revolutionising AdBlue with a lower carbon footprint

At Fleetmaxx Solutions, we’re deeply committed to reducing environmental impact, and this extends beyond our AdBlue solutions to the entire operational process behind our Smart Tank AdBlue telemetry service. Our partners are at the forefront of this transformation, continually seeking methods to lessen their carbon footprint.

AdBlue has been vital in curbing harmful emissions from diesel engines. However, the traditional production process has relied heavily on fossil fuels, posing significant environmental challenges.

Understanding traditional AdBlue production

For those unfamiliar, AdBlue is a 32.5% urea solution combined with demineralised water, used in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to minimise harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from vehicles.

Since the European Union introduced stringent pollution regulations in 2006 with Euro IV, AdBlue has become essential in the fight for cleaner air. Yet, its conventional production methods largely depend on fossil fuels, especially for heating water during the urea dissolution process.

Typically, AdBlue is produced by dissolving urea in water, which naturally lowers the mixture’s temperature. To prevent freezing, the water must be heated to around 40°C. Traditionally, this heating has been achieved using fossil fuels like natural gas, oil, coal, or even biomass.

Greener AdBlue production with renewable energy

Fortunately, our partners are spearheading efforts to create a greener future for AdBlue production. With unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship, they have partnered with Brooke Energy to bring innovative AdBlue production to the UK.

Brooke Energy is renowned for producing premium dry wood chips for biomass boilers and plays a crucial role in this advancement. By shifting from fossil fuels to biomass – specifically waste wood – for heating the water needed in the urea dissolution process, they have made a significant impact.

This waste wood, which would otherwise end up in landfills or be incinerated, is now used as a renewable heat source. This innovative approach not only drastically reduces the carbon footprint of AdBlue production but also supports a circular economy by diverting waste from landfills.

Towards a sustainable future

The benefits of using biomass extend beyond just producing AdBlue with a lower carbon footprint for our Smart Tank automatic top-up service. The heat generated from biomass also powers a steam turbine, contributing electricity to the national grid, underscoring our partners’ dedication to sustainability and innovation.

Looking ahead, plans are in place to utilise non-recyclable waste to generate heat for up to 8,000 homes across two housing projects. This initiative will significantly reduce landfill waste while providing both electricity and direct heat, steering us towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.

Setting a new standard in the industry

The collaboration between our partners and Brooke Energy is a shining example of what can be achieved through innovation and a steadfast commitment to the environment. The technologies and processes developed here are setting a new standard for the industry. Together, we are driving positive change and paving the way for a cleaner, greener future.
