AdBlue warnings: A vital reminder for high-mileage and pool car drivers
AdBlue warnings: An article by Steve Buckley, Sales Manager, Fleetmaxx Solutions Burnley
Keeping your fleet running efficiently means more than just staying on top of fuel costs. One area where we still see costly issues arise—especially among high-mileage and pool car drivers—is AdBlue® management.
At Fleetmaxx Solutions, we work closely with fleets across the UK, and we’re encouraged by signs that more drivers are now aware of how and when to top up their AdBlue®. In fact, the AA has reported a 5% drop in AdBlue-related breakdowns in the first half of the year compared with the previous year. That’s progress worth noting and shows that AdBlue warnings are breaking through.
But make no mistake: the job isn’t done.
With the rise of Euro 6 diesel vehicles and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems, AdBlue® usage is now a routine part of running a clean, compliant fleet. And while diesel sales are falling overall, diesel still powers more than a quarter of new vehicles sold—meaning AdBlue® is here to stay.
Education is working—but we can’t ease off the pedal just yet
The AA rightly credits fleet managers for educating drivers, and I agree—there’s clearly been a step up in awareness. But we still see too many cases of drivers ignoring dashboard warnings or assuming AdBlue® isn’t their problem because “it’s a pool car” or “I’m just on one trip.”
Let me be clear: running out of AdBlue® is not just inconvenient—it can immobilise the vehicle. You’ll see reduced power first, but once you stop, the engine won’t restart until it’s topped up.
Most vehicles will warn drivers well in advance, so there’s no excuse for letting it get that far. If you’re a driver, stay alert. If you’re a fleet manager, reinforce the message regularly. Don’t assume they know—especially with pool vehicles where responsibility can feel a bit blurred.
AdBlue warnings: Weather, payloads, and tank size all make a difference
Heading into autumn and winter, we always remind our customers that AdBlue® consumption can rise sharply in colder conditions and when vehicles are under heavier load. Depending on the tank size, you might be used to topping up every 10,000 miles—but in tougher conditions, that could drop to 3,000 miles or even less.
That variability means proactive monitoring is essential—especially for fleets clocking up serious mileage across multiple vehicles.

AdBlue® doesn’t need to be a headache—but ignoring it definitely can be.
