Does AdBlue® improve your fleets MPG?
Does AdBlue Improve MPG? An article by Steve Buckley, Sales Manager, Fleetmaxx Solutions Burnley
If you run a fleet, you’re probably familiar with AdBlue – the solution that reduces harmful emissions from diesel engines. But have you ever wondered what effect it has on your fuel consumption?
I often get asked by fleet operators, “Does AdBlue® improve fuel economy?” It’s a fair question, especially as fuel prices continue to be a major operating cost. While AdBlue® plays a critical role in emissions control, its impact on miles per gallon (MPG) isn’t always as straightforward as people think.
Let’s break it down.
What is AdBlue®?
AdBlue® is a urea-based fluid used in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems. These systems are fitted to modern diesel vehicles to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. When injected into the exhaust stream, AdBlue® reacts with NOx to form harmless nitrogen and water vapour. It doesn’t go into the engine, and it doesn’t burn like fuel—it’s purely about cleaning up the exhaust gases after combustion.
So, does AdBlue improve MPG?
Not directly.
AdBlue® itself doesn’t enhance the combustion process or affect the engine’s efficiency. However, what it does allow is for engines to be tuned differently. Because SCR systems handle NOx emissions externally, manufacturers can configure engines to run at higher combustion temperatures, which are generally more efficient. In theory, this tuning can lead to better MPG compared to older engines that relied solely on internal EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems.
But here’s the catch—any fuel savings you gain from the engine being more efficient can be offset by the cost of purchasing and using AdBlue® regularly.
Real-world fleet insight
In my role at Fleetmaxx Solutions, I’ve analysed fuel and AdBlue® usage across hundreds of commercial fleets. Here’s what we see on the ground:
-
For Euro 6 vehicles using SCR, MPG performance is generally stable—and in some cases marginally better than Euro 5 engines.
-
Driving style, load weight, idle time, and route planning still have a far bigger impact on MPG than AdBlue® usage ever will.
-
That’s why at Fleetmaxx, we offer support beyond just supplying AdBlue®. Our Fleetloc8 tracking and telematics software helps improve driver behaviour, reduce idling, and identify unnecessary fuel burn. And for routing, our My Transport Planner tool provides dynamic, optimised route planning that cuts down on mileage, drive time, and costs.
-
Companies that monitor both fuel and AdBlue® usage properly—and take advantage of smart tools like ours—tend to manage costs better and see more consistent performance.
Manufactured by us, supplied direct to you
One of the biggest advantages we offer is that we don’t just supply AdBlue®—we manufacture it ourselves right here in the UK. Our in-house brand, Fleetblue, is produced at our own facility and distributed directly to businesses across the country.
Because there’s no middleman, businesses can save up to 50% off forecourt prices by buying direct from us, the manufacturer. Whether you need IBCs, barrels, or bulk delivery, we’ve got flexible supply options that fit the needs of your operation—large or small.
So not only are you keeping your fleet compliant with emissions regulations, but you’re also cutting running costs without compromising on quality.
Should you view AdBlue® as a fuel saver?
No—but that’s not its purpose. The goal of AdBlue® is compliance. It ensures your fleet meets Euro 6 emissions standards, keeps you on the right side of Clean Air Zones and Ultra Low Emission Zones, and helps reduce your environmental impact.
Running out of AdBlue® can cause vehicles to go into limp mode, which hurts performance and fuel economy. That’s why consistent supply—and reliable savings—matter.
Final thoughts
While AdBlue® doesn’t directly improve MPG, it enables cleaner, more efficient engine designs that can contribute to better fuel performance in the long term. But if you’re looking to actively improve fuel economy, your best bet is a combination of driver training, telematics, route optimisation, and fuel analytics—which, by the way, is exactly what we help with here at Fleetmaxx Burnley.
