£7.3 Billion impact if a Fuel Duty rise ends the UK’s long-running freeze
Fuel duty rise guide By Stephen Buckley, Sales Manager, Fleetmaxx Solutions Burnley
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has warned that ending the long-standing fuel duty freeze could add £7.3 billion to UK household costs by 2029.
The message to the Chancellor ahead of the Autumn Budget is clear — a fuel duty rise would drive up living costs and squeeze the transport industry that keeps Britain moving.
According to RHA research, a 5p-per-litre increase in fuel duty would not only raise pump prices but also push up distribution costs across every sector. This would lead to higher prices for food, drink, and energy, increasing the cost of living for everyone.
The study estimates that a 5p rise would lift overall consumer prices by 0.3%, draining around £2 billion a year from UK households. The average car-owning family would pay an extra £100 annually — rising to £360 by 2029 if the fuel duty freeze ends.
Why a fuel duty rise matters for UK fleets
As RHA Managing Director Richard Smith highlighted, diesel costs more in the UK than anywhere else in Europe, with more than half of every pound spent at the pump going to government tax.
For transport and logistics operators, this isn’t just another expense — it’s a potential hammer blow. Road freight businesses are already dealing with tight margins, rising insurance premiums, and fluctuating wholesale fuel prices.
A fuel duty increase would force many fleets to absorb extra costs or pass them along the supply chain. Either way, it means higher prices for essential goods and services — and households ultimately pay the price.
