Global EV sales accelerate with 15% growth in August

The momentum behind electric vehicles shows no sign of slowing. According to the latest data from Rho Motion, global EV and plug-in hybrid sales grew by 15% year-on-year in August 2025. That’s 1.7 million vehicles sold in a single month – made up of 1.16 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 0.57 million plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).
So far this year, 12.5 million EVs have been sold worldwide, showing just how quickly businesses and drivers are embracing cleaner, more efficient transport.
European EV market surges ahead
Europe is currently setting the pace with a 31% year-to-date (YTD) increase in EV sales. BEVs are up 31% and PHEVs close behind at 30%.

Germany leads the way with a 45% rise in sales.

The UK continues its strong performance with 31% growth YTD.

Spain has seen sales double this year.

Italy reports growth of 41%.

France, however, remains slightly down at -9% YTD.
This growth across Europe is being driven by stricter emissions legislation and increased model availability, making EVs a mainstream choice for fleets and private drivers alike.
North America sees record growth
In North America, EV sales are up 6% YTD. The US has seen a late summer surge, as many drivers accelerated purchases ahead of the expiry of federal EV tax credits at the end of September.
Rho Motion notes that August 2025 marked a record monthly high for North American EV sales, showing that incentives remain a powerful tool in driving adoption.
China slows, but still leads the world
China remains the world’s largest EV market, though growth has eased in recent months. August saw an 11% month-on-month rise, but only 6% year-on-year – slowing YTD growth to 25%. While growth has softened, China continues to lead on volume and infrastructure scale.
