For many drivers, charging at home is the most convenient and cost-effective way to run an EV. Plug in overnight, wake up with charge in the battery, and start the day ready to go. But for people living in terraced streets, flats, rented homes or properties without off-street parking, home charging has often felt out of reach.
That may now be changing.
New plans to improve home EV charging
The Government has announced plans to legislate this summer to help people without driveways access home EV charging more easily.
This includes proposed permitted development rights for EV charging solutions, reducing planning barriers and helping approved systems be installed faster.
One of the most talked-about changes is support for cross-pavement charging, allowing drivers to safely connect their home charger to a vehicle parked outside using specially designed cable channels or similar approved solutions.
There are also proposals aimed at renters and leaseholders, helping them request and install charge points more easily where they live.
Why home EV charging matters
Home EV charging is usually the cheapest and simplest way to power an electric vehicle. Public charging is improving rapidly, but charging at home often gives drivers lower energy costs and greater convenience.
Figures suggest around eight million households in England do not have access to off-street parking. That means millions of people may have felt locked out of the benefits of EV ownership.
If these changes are delivered well, many more households could gain access to practical home EV charging.
Good news for business fleets
This is also excellent news for businesses switching company cars and vans to electric.
Many employees who drive business vehicles live in homes without driveways. Easier home EV charging can make it more practical for staff to charge overnight, reduce reliance on public chargers and help businesses lower running costs.
For companies looking at salary sacrifice EV schemes or fleet electrification, this could remove a major obstacle.
My view
This is a smart step forward.
The UK needs home EV charging to work for more than just homes with driveways. It needs to work for streets, flats, rental properties and everyday households.
If the Government gets this right, it could help open EV ownership to millions more drivers and speed up the move to cleaner transport.
