How to store AdBlue®?

I have often been asked how to store AdBlue® here we try and give you the answers.
AdBlue®, or diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), must be manufactured to the ISO 22241 standard and should be stored carefully to maintain its quality and effectiveness in reducing harmful emissions from diesel engines.
Here are some key guidelines when storing AdBlue®:
Use the Correct Container: Diesel exhaust fluid should be stored in containers specifically designed for this purpose. These containers are typically made of materials like high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or stainless steel and are resistant to the corrosive nature of AdBlue. Always use approved and sealed containers to prevent contamination.
Protect from Contamination: AdBlue® is highly sensitive to contamination, which can degrade its quality and reduce its effectiveness. Store diesel exhaust fluid away from materials or substances that can contaminate it, such as oils, fuels, and dust. Dedicated storage tanks and containers are ideal to prevent cross-contamination.
Maintain Purity: Diesel exhaust fluid must be stored in a clean and dry environment. Ensure that the storage area is free from dust, debris, and any other contaminants. Water should also be kept away to prevent dilution of the AdBlue® solution.
Control Temperature: AdBlue has a freezing point of approximately -11°C (12°F). Avoid storing it at temperatures below this level as freezing can damage the solution. If AdBlue® freezes, it can be thawed and used as long as it’s not diluted with water.
Protect from Direct Sunlight: Exposure to direct sunlight for extended periods can cause AdBlue to degrade. To prevent this, store it in a shaded area or use UV-resistant containers.
And a few more things to look out for when storing AdBlue®:
Check Expiry Dates: Diesel exhaust fluid has a limited shelf life, typically around 12 to 18 months, depending on storage conditions. Check the expiration date on the container, and use AdBlue within this timeframe to ensure its effectiveness.
Secure Storage Tanks: For larger quantities of AdBlue® used in commercial or industrial applications, consider using purpose-built storage tanks. These tanks should be made of materials that resist corrosion and have secure lids to prevent contamination.
Labeling and Identification: Clearly label AdBlue® containers or tanks to prevent confusion with other fluids. The labelling should specify that it contains AdBlue and provide safety information.
Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect storage containers and tanks for any signs of contamination, damage, or leaks. Promptly address any issues to maintain AdBlue quality.
Segregate from Other Fluids: Store AdBlue® separately from other fluids used in vehicles and machinery. This helps prevent accidental mixing or contamination.
Adhering to these guidelines will help ensure that AdBlue® remains pure and effective for reducing harmful emissions in diesel engines. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for storage and handling.
