As someone who has spent a career immersed in operations and efficiency, but also a lifetime as a motor enthusiast, I’ve always been fascinated by how the automotive world balances engineering innovation, driver passion, and future sustainability. Few cars manage to tick all three boxes, but the newly launched Polestar 5 is a rare exception.
This is more than just a car – it’s a statement. Polestar, the Swedish performance electric brand, has officially pulled the covers off its four-door performance Grand Tourer, and it’s clear that their future-facing vision, first revealed back in 2020 with the Precept concept, has not only been realised but arguably exceeded.
A bold arrival
The Polestar 5 Dual Motor Launch Edition starts at £89,500, while the Performance Launch Edition commands £104,900. Those numbers alone put it into the same conversation as Porsche’s Taycan, Audi’s e-tron GT, and even certain Aston Martins and Bentleys. But Polestar hasn’t just joined the club—they’ve written new rules.
The foundations come from a bespoke bonded aluminium platform. It’s lightweight, stiff, and purpose-built for performance. Add to this an in-house developed motor paired with an 800V electrical system, and you’ve got headline numbers that would make any petrolhead sit up straight:

These figures put the Polestar 5 firmly in the performance car league. And yet, this isn’t a stripped-out sports car—it’s a Grand Tourer. Which means it’s equally about covering serious distances in comfort and style.
Design that inspires
Faithful to the Precept concept, the Polestar 5 measures just under five metres long. It wears its Scandinavian minimalism proudly, with clean surfacing, taut lines, and aerodynamic intent. Aviation was a major inspiration, and you can see it in the sleek roofline and wing-like profile, complemented by a Kamm tail for aero efficiency.
The nose features Polestar’s SmartZone, integrating sensors and cameras, while the brand’s signature dual-blade headlights with Pixel LED tech come as standard. Around the back, the full-width light bar is more than just dramatic design—it actively contributes to airflow.
Despite its coupe-like proportions, clever engineering ensures rear passengers aren’t left short-changed. The panoramic glass roof, stretching over two metres long, floods the cabin with light, giving an airy and premium feel.
And it wouldn’t be a flagship without exclusivity—the Polestar 5 launches with six colour choices, including two matte finishes: Storm, a moody dark grey, and Magnesium, a shimmering silver.
Inside the cabin
Step inside, and you’ll discover a cabin designed with equal focus on driver and passengers. The 4+1 seating arrangement means it’s primarily a four-seater, but can function as a five when needed. The Recaro-developed front seats set the tone—low-slung, bolstered for support, yet comfortable for long drives. Options include MicroTech upholstery or Bridge of Weir Nappa leather, complete with ventilation and massage functions.
Rear passengers aren’t treated as second-class citizens either. They get their own reclining seats, individual climate controls, heating, ventilation, and even massage features. Drop the armrest, and you’ve got limousine-like comfort. Raise it, and you’ve got space for a fifth passenger.
Tech lovers won’t be disappointed. The 14.5-inch central touchscreen runs on Android Automotive OS with Google built-in, offering Google Maps, Assistant, and the ability to customise tiles and shortcuts. A head-up display and a 9-inch driver display complete the digital setup, ensuring the driver always has essential information directly in view.
And then there’s the sound. A 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system with 1,680W output ensures the Polestar 5 can be as much a concert hall as a car. Combined with active road noise cancellation and ambient lighting, it creates a genuinely first-class atmosphere.
Sustainability at the core
One of the most impressive aspects of the Polestar 5 isn’t just its performance—it’s the brand’s commitment to sustainability. Automotive materials are undergoing a revolution, and Polestar has leaned heavily into this.

This isn’t “sustainability for show.” It’s real, measurable reductions in fossil-based materials and CO2 footprint. For someone like me—who loves cars but also recognises the environmental responsibilities of the industry—this is the future we need to embrace.
Engineering brilliance
Of course, all the design and sustainability in the world would mean little if the Polestar 5 didn’t deliver where it counts: on the road. Thankfully, Polestar’s engineers have ensured it does.
The 112kWh battery (106kWh usable) supports charging up to 350kW, meaning a 10–80% top-up can take as little as 22 minutes. On range, the Dual Motor edition offers up to 416 miles WLTP, while the Performance edition still manages an impressive 351 miles.
Handling has been honed using BWI MagneRide adaptive damping in the Performance edition, while Brembo brakes, bespoke Michelin tyres, and a lightweight suspension setup all contribute to a drive that promises to be engaging yet refined.
The torsional rigidity of the chassis even exceeds that of many two-seat supercars—a fact that speaks volumes about the engineering depth here.
Safety and intelligence
Polestar hasn’t ignored safety, either. The Polestar 5 comes packed with 11 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, radars, and driver monitoring systems. Pilot Assist keeps the car centred in its lane at speeds up to 93mph, while radar-based occupant detection ensures airbags deploy intelligently.
It’s reassuring to see such advanced safety integrated into a car that’s also designed for thrill-seeking drivers.
Why it matters
For me, the Polestar 5 represents a turning point. Electric cars are no longer about compromise. This is a luxury Grand Tourer that’s lighter, faster, smarter, and greener than many of its petrol-powered rivals. It’s not just competitive—it’s a genuine benchmark.
It tells us that the future of performance motoring doesn’t mean giving up passion, speed, or excitement. Quite the opposite—electric technology, when executed like this, can actually heighten all three.
