Why giving up anger for lent will make our roads safer

Road rage article by Steve Clarke, Marketing Manager at Fleetmaxx Solutions

Nearly half of UK drivers admit they have experienced road rage. Let that sink in for a moment. The daily commute, the school run, the motorway miles between jobs, all quietly simmering like kettles left on too long.

New research from OOONO reveals that 47 percent of UK drivers say they have experienced road rage. One in six say it happens often. A further 31 percent say it happens occasionally. That means for many drivers, anger on the road is no longer rare. It is routine.

As Lent begins, millions across the UK will consider giving up chocolate, alcohol, or social media. Perhaps the most powerful thing we could give up this year is something far more dangerous. Road rage.

Road rage is becoming a cultural norm

The study, conducted with more than 2,000 UK drivers, paints a picture of modern life spilling onto modern roads.

Twelve percent of drivers say they feel stressed, anxious or emotionally overwhelmed every single day while driving. When you include those who feel this several times a week, the figure climbs to 40 percent.

This is not just traffic frustration. It is emotional overload on four wheels.

Drivers aged 35 to 44 are the most likely to experience road rage regularly, with 29 percent reporting frequent incidents. Men are twice as likely as women to experience road rage often, 22 percent compared to 9 percent.

But here is the real headline. Congestion is not the main trigger.

The real causes of road rage

When drivers were asked what contributes most to their stress, the answers were telling:

  • Lack of sleep, 33 percent

  • Work pressure, 29 percent

  • Financial pressure linked to the cost of living, 27 percent

  • Family or relationship pressures, 24 percent

  • Health concerns, 21 percent

By the time many people turn the ignition key, they are already carrying a day’s worth of tension. The car becomes a pressure chamber. The smallest spark can feel like a fuse.

As Sean Morris from OOONO explains, driving has become one of the main pressure points of modern life. The road is simply where stress surfaces.

Why road rage matters for fleets

At Fleetmaxx Solutions, we work with fleets across the UK. From HGV operators to courier services and company car drivers, we see first hand how driver behaviour impacts safety, fuel efficiency and operating costs.

Road rage is not just a personal issue. It is a business risk.

Aggressive driving can lead to:

  • Increased collision risk

  • Higher fuel consumption

  • Greater vehicle wear and tear

  • Insurance premium rises

  • Reputational damage

For fleet operators, road rage is not just about emotions. It is about compliance, cost control and duty of care.

Giving up road rage for Lent

Lent is traditionally a period of reflection and self control. Forty days to reset habits. Forty days to break a pattern.

What if drivers chose to give up anger behind the wheel?

Imagine:

  • Pausing before reacting

  • Letting someone merge without commentary

  • Turning down the volume instead of turning up the temper

  • Taking a breath at a red light instead of treating it like a personal insult

Calmer driving reduces risk. It improves concentration. It protects vulnerable road users. It makes journeys more predictable for everyone.

And here is the encouraging part. Twenty four percent of drivers say they have never experienced road rage. That proves it is possible.

Turning awareness into action

Road rage in the UK is not just about bad drivers. It reflects wider stress in society. Work demands. Financial pressures. Family responsibilities. Fatigue.

As fleet operators and responsible drivers, we cannot control every external pressure. But we can influence what happens once we are behind the wheel. Our tracking software, Fleetloc8, can help you monitor and improve your drivers’ behaviour.

Safer roads begin with calmer drivers. Whether you observe Lent or not, perhaps this season offers a useful reminder.

If nearly half the nation admits to road rage, then choosing not to participate is quietly revolutionary.

At Fleetmaxx Solutions, we believe road safety is not just about technology or compliance. It is about behaviour. And sometimes the smallest shift in mindset can make the biggest difference on the road.

If we can change how we feel behind the wheel, we can change how our roads feel too.
