Shell Recharge EV driver survey 2025 results
EV Driver Survey results by Steve Clarke, Marketing Manager, Fleetmaxx Solutions
As EV growth continues to reshape fleet and driver behaviour, we need more than just charging points—we need to understand what’s happening behind the wheel. That’s exactly what the Shell Recharge EV Driver Survey 2025 set out to do.
Shell surveyed over 15,000 drivers across Europe, the USA, and China, providing one of the most comprehensive snapshots of how electric vehicle drivers—and those considering the switch—are thinking, feeling, and acting right now. The results are both encouraging and eye-opening for anyone navigating the transition to electric.
Here at Fleetmaxx Solutions, we know how crucial it is to base decisions on real-world insights. That’s why I’m sharing some of the key highlights from the report.
1. Vehicle ownership: The mix is evolving
The survey looked at how many vehicles drivers own, what type they are, and how they were acquired. While EV ownership is clearly rising, many households and businesses still operate a mix of petrol, diesel, and electric vehicles. Leasing remains a popular option for EV acquisition, especially among newer adopters who want to reduce upfront costs.
2. Vehicle usage: commercial use is on the rise
EVs aren’t just for personal use anymore. A growing percentage are being used for commercial purposes—especially for deliveries, local logistics, and service-based businesses. Mileage varies, but the majority of EV drivers reported consistent daily use, showing that EVs are becoming reliable workhorses.
3. EV purchase intentions: The shift is accelerating
Drivers were asked about their next vehicle choice. The results show a strong shift toward electric, influenced by legislation, low-carbon fuel incentives, and growing environmental awareness. This aligns with what we’re seeing among Fleetmaxx customers—more operators are preparing their fleets for a low-emissions future.
4. attitudes to evs: Benefits are clear, barriers remain
The top reasons drivers chose EVs included lower running costs, environmental impact, and the quiet driving experience. However, challenges like purchase cost, charging infrastructure, and range anxiety remain significant barriers—particularly among non-EV drivers.
5. The charging landscape: Infrastructure still a hot topic
Where people charge matters. Most respondents use a mix of home, work, and public charging—but concerns about reliability, availability, and ease of use remain widespread. Interoperability between networks and payment simplicity are critical needs, particularly for commercial drivers.
6. Managing long(er) journeys: Planning is everything
Longer trips are still a challenge for many EV users. The survey found that while most manage well, charging availability and dwell time planning are key factors. Increasing dwell time opportunities—such as retail, food, or rest facilities near chargers—can greatly improve the long-distance EV experience.
7. Non-fuel retail: More than just a top-up
Here’s an interesting one—coffee, snacks, and convenience purchases have increased since drivers switched to EVs. With longer dwell times during charging, NFR becomes part of the EV lifestyle. Businesses that get this right are already winning repeat visits from EV drivers.
Shell EV driver survey: A deeper look into driver behaviour
This report isn’t just about statistics. It’s about how people use and experience EVs, and what businesses need to consider to support that shift. From charging infrastructure to on-site facilities and the role of retail, EV growth touches every part of the driver journey.
Shell’s findings help us at Fleetmaxx Solutions better understand the challenges our customers face—so we can tailor our fuel and EV card solutions accordingly. Whether you’re running a mixed fleet or considering your first electric vehicle, these insights are invaluable.
