Shell is redefining what electric vehicles can achieve

If you have ever spoken to a business that is thinking about switching to electric vehicles, the same questions usually come up. How long does charging take? How far will the vehicle travel? Will the batteries last? And how can we keep costs under control?

That is exactly why I was fascinated to see Shell unveil its new Shell Triple 10 Challenge concept car. As one of Fleetmaxx Solutions’ EV specialists and a proud Shell partner, I am always interested in innovations that could make electric vehicles more practical, more efficient and easier for businesses to adopt.

While this is currently a concept vehicle rather than a production model, it gives us a fascinating glimpse into where electric vehicle technology could be heading over the next few years.

Shell Triple 10 Challenge – Three ambitious targets

Shell challenged its engineers to create a vehicle capable of achieving three major goals:

10-minute charge time

Charging from 10% to 80% in under 10 minutes

10km/kWh driving efficiency

Delivering an impressive 10km per kWh of energy

10 tonnes CO2e emissions

Producing just 10 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent over its entire lifecycle

They call it the Shell Triple 10 Challenge, and the results are certainly impressive.

Charging in less than 10 minutes thats the “Shell Triple 10 Challenge”

One of the biggest barriers to wider EV adoption has always been charging time.

Although some premium electric vehicles can already charge incredibly quickly, many require ultra-high-powered chargers of over 300kW. These chargers are still relatively uncommon across the UK charging network.

Shell’s concept takes a different approach.

Using advanced thermal management technology, the vehicle can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 9 minutes 54 seconds using a much more widely available 175kW public charger.

That means drivers could add around 245 kilometres of range in under ten minutes, making charging stops much closer to the time it takes to refuel a conventional vehicle.

For commercial fleets, courier operators and business users, that could make a significant difference to vehicle utilisation and productivity.

The clever part is not the battery

Many people assume faster charging simply means fitting a bigger battery.

Shell has gone in the opposite direction.

Instead of relying on larger and heavier battery packs, engineers focused on improving how heat is managed throughout the vehicle.

Heat is one of the biggest challenges when charging an electric vehicle quickly. The hotter the battery becomes, the harder it is to charge safely and efficiently.

Shell’s answer is its advanced Shell Recharge thermal fluid, which replaces traditional water-glycol cooling with a specialised dielectric cooling fluid.

This allows much more effective temperature control across the battery, motor and power electronics, helping the vehicle charge faster while protecting battery health.

It is a clever engineering solution that could help manufacturers reduce battery size, vehicle weight and overall costs.

More efficiency means more range

The Shell Triple 10 Challenge vehicle has also demonstrated a driving efficiency of 10km per kWh.

That represents over a 30% improvement in overall energy efficiency compared with many current generation battery electric vehicles.

Greater efficiency means drivers can travel further using less electricity.

For fleet operators, that means:

  • Lower electricity costs
  • Reduced downtime
  • Longer driving range
  • Improved operating efficiency

As businesses continue looking for ways to reduce running costs while lowering emissions, improvements like these become increasingly valuable.

Lower emissions from start to finish

The environmental benefits are just as impressive.

By combining:

  • Smaller batteries
  • Lightweight construction
  • Recycled materials
  • Simplified cooling systems
  • Renewable electricity

Shell estimates the vehicle could achieve a total lifecycle carbon footprint of around 10 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

That represents approximately 50% lower lifecycle emissions than many comparable electric vehicles currently available.

Rather than simply focusing on zero tailpipe emissions, the Shell Triple 10 Challenge looks at reducing the environmental impact of the entire vehicle from manufacture through to operation.

What does this mean for businesses today?

Although the Triple 10 Challenge remains a concept vehicle, it demonstrates that EV technology continues to evolve at an incredible pace.

Every year we are seeing:

  • Faster charging
  • Greater driving range
  • Better battery efficiency
  • Lower running costs
  • Improved reliability

For businesses considering the move to electric vehicles, that is excellent news.

As someone who works with businesses every day to understand electric vehicles, I find developments like the Shell Triple 10 Challenge genuinely exciting.

Will every future EV charge in under ten minutes? Perhaps not immediately.

But innovations like this demonstrate just how quickly the technology is advancing.
