The true cost of pothole damage

Pothole damage guide by Kyle Davy, Sales Manager – Fleetmaxx Solutions Ipswich

Reports shed light on just how much these pesky road craters are costing us Brits. According to Kwik Fit’s annual PIT Report (Pothole Impact Tracker), the repair bill for pothole damage skyrocketed to a staggering £1.48 billion last year alone.

Surprisingly, this hefty sum actually marks a slight decrease from the eye-watering £1.67 billion reported in 2022. However, let’s not break out the champagne just yet – the overall trend is still on the rise. Since 2018, the cost of pothole-related repairs has ballooned by a whopping 61%, reaching a jaw-dropping total of £9.5 billion over the past six years.

Pothole damage - Deep water-filled pothole that could cause tyre, wheel and suspension damage

So, what’s causing all this pothole damage?

Well, if you’ve ever had the misfortune of hitting a pothole, you’ll know it’s no joke. On average, drivers are shelling out £120 for repairs, with a staggering 660,000 cars facing bills exceeding £300. The usual suspects – tyres, wheels, and suspension – bear the brunt of the damage, accounting for over half of all cases.

What’s more concerning is that nearly half of all pothole damage isn’t immediately apparent. It’s only when drivers inspect their vehicles in the days following the impact that the full extent of the damage becomes clear. And with 60% of drivers admitting to hitting at least one pothole a week, it’s no wonder our roads resemble Swiss cheese.

Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit, doesn’t mince his words when he says,

“The worsening condition of our roads is a long-term issue.”

With council budgets stretched thin, the burden falls squarely on drivers’ wallets. But it’s not just about the money – potholes pose a real safety risk to motorists.

The RAC’s recent findings paint an equally grim picture. Breakdowns due to bad road surfaces have skyrocketed by 53% in the first quarter of 2024 alone. And compared to 2006, drivers are now nearly twice as likely to experience pothole damage.

So, what’s the takeaway from all this?

Potholes aren’t just a nuisance – they’re a costly and potentially dangerous problem that shows no signs of slowing down. It’s high time we invested in fixing our crumbling roads before the damage becomes irreparable. Because when it comes to potholes, the price we pay goes far beyond just the repair bill.

Pothole damage our conclusion

In conclusion, the rising cost of pothole damage is not just a financial burden but also a safety concern for drivers across the UK. As our roads continue to deteriorate, the risk of vehicle damage and breakdowns due to potholes only grows. It’s clear that urgent action is needed to address this ongoing issue and ensure safer, smoother journeys for all.
