Esso Diesel Efficient ™ – Heavy-duty diesel fuel with strong all-round performance

Esso Diesel Efficient ™ guide by Stephen Buckley, Sales Manager & Senior Fuel Analyst at Fleetmaxx Solutions

When it comes to heavy-duty diesel fuel, reliability, performance, and efficiency matter more than ever. That’s why I’m a strong advocate for Esso Diesel Efficient ™ fuel — a formulation that not only delivers a cleaner engine and lower emissions but also helps fleets cut fuel costs and reduce maintenance downtime.

At Fleetmaxx Solutions, we work with fleets of all sizes — from long-haul logistics operators to local delivery businesses — and we’ve seen firsthand how choosing the right fuel can make a measurable difference to both your bottom line and your environmental footprint.

Cleaner engines, stronger performance with Esso Diesel Efficient™

Esso Diesel Efficient™ fuel has been specially developed to tackle one of the biggest challenges in diesel engine operation — injector cleanliness. The fuel is formulated to prevent the build-up of internal and external deposits that can restrict fuel flow, disrupt spray patterns, and reduce engine power.

Keeping injectors clean maintains efficient combustion, which in turn helps engines run smoother, deliver stronger performance, and consume less fuel. Over time, that means fewer breakdowns, less maintenance, and lower operational costs.

Independent testing backs this up: Esso Diesel Efficient ™ fuel has been shown to reduce particulate matter by an average of 22%, NOx emissions by 10%, and CO₂ emissions by 2.8% compared to standard Esso™ diesel.*

Independent proof from Millbrook and Pfaff Logistics

This isn’t just lab talk — the benefits have been tested in the real world. At Millbrook Proving Ground Ltd. in the UK, Esso Diesel Efficient™ was compared with unadditised diesel across customer trucks covering 110,000 miles (177,000 km) over five months of daily operation in motorway, rural, and urban environments.

The results? Fuel consumption dropped between 2.1% and 3.4%, proving that the fuel’s performance advantages hold up under demanding fleet conditions.

Further trials in Germany by Pfaff Logistics in Baienfurt confirmed these results — showing fuel savings between 2.6% and 4.7% using Esso Diesel Efficient™ fuel in heavy-duty trucks.

That’s tangible, real-world efficiency that fleet operators can rely on.

Protection where it matters most

Modern diesel engines are precision-built, and keeping them protected is vital. Esso Diesel Efficient ™ includes a corrosion inhibitor that prevents water from reaching critical metal surfaces within the fuel system. This safeguard helps extend component life and prevent costly repairs.

The formulation also includes an anti-foaming agent, making refuelling quicker, cleaner, and more efficient. For busy fleet operations where every minute counts, those small time savings at the pump can add up quickly.

Savings that go beyond the pump

Fuel efficiency doesn’t just mean saving money on diesel — it also means improving uptime, reducing emissions, and strengthening sustainability credentials. With Esso Diesel Efficient™, you’re using a fuel that performs consistently, protects your vehicles, and supports your environmental goals.

As someone who works closely with businesses across the UK, I’ve seen the difference high-performance fuels like Esso Diesel Efficient ™ can make. Cleaner engines, fewer maintenance issues, and measurable cost savings all add up to a smarter choice for any fleet operator.

See the results for yourself

Don’t just take my word for it — see how Esso Diesel Efficient™ fuel performed in the Pfaff Logistics trials and at Millbrook Proving Ground in this video. It’s an impressive demonstration of how advanced fuel technology can deliver real-world results for fleets everywhere.

Cleaner engines. Lower emissions. Greater efficiency.
That’s the Esso Diesel Efficient™ difference.

The small print from Esso

Esso Diesel Efficient™ fuel claims are based on internal and third-party vehicle engine testing, laboratory testing, and/or industry or other scientific literature. Basis for comparison for all claims is versus Esso™ unadditised diesel. Vehicle type, engine type, driving behavior, and other factors also impact fuel and vehicle performance, emissions, and fuel economy. Esso Diesel Efficient™ fuel may be used in all heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles, but results may vary.
