About the GRIDSERVE Electric Highway
GRIDSERVE is a British sustainable energy business working to make electric vehicle charging easier, faster and more accessible.
Its nationwide charging network is powered exclusively by renewable energy, including energy generated by its own solar farms. GRIDSERVE combines renewable energy generation with high-power charging technology to support the transition to electric transport.
The company operates one of the most recognised public charging networks in the country, offering chargers at motorway service areas, retail destinations and dedicated charging forecourts.
Welcome to the GRIDSERVE Electric Highway
The GRIDSERVE Electric Highway is a nationwide network of reliable and conveniently located electric vehicle chargers.
Its charging locations are designed around three main formats:
Electric Forecourts®
GRIDSERVE Electric Forecourts® are purpose-built electric vehicle charging destinations. They provide multiple high-power charging bays alongside useful facilities where drivers can eat, drink, work or relax while their vehicle charges.
Electric Super Hubs
Electric Super Hubs are located at busy motorway service areas and major transport routes. They provide multiple high-power chargers and are particularly useful for drivers completing long journeys.
Electric Retail Hubs
Electric Retail Hubs bring convenient EV charging to shopping and leisure destinations, allowing drivers to recharge while visiting nearby shops and facilities.
Together, these locations help make electric vehicle travel practical for businesses operating locally and nationwide.

Which Shell cards can be used at GRIDSERVE Electric Highway?
GRIDSERVE Electric Highway charging is now available to Fleetmaxx Solutions business customers using the following eligible cards:
The Shell Hybrid Card is particularly useful for businesses operating a combination of electric, diesel and petrol vehicles. It allows eligible vehicle costs to be managed through one account and consolidated invoicing.
For fully electric fleets, the Shell Recharge Card and Shell CRT EV Card provide a straightforward way to pay for public charging without drivers needing to use personal bank cards or reclaim expenses.
Important information for drivers
There are a few important points your drivers need to know before visiting a GRIDSERVE location.
Use the physical RFID card
Access to GRIDSERVE Electric Highway charging locations is currently available using the physical Shell card RFID only.
Drivers should take their Shell Recharge Card, Shell Hybrid Card or Shell CRT EV Card with them and tap it on the charger’s RFID reader to start their charging session.
Locations are not yet visible in the Shell App
Although eligible Shell cards can now be used at participating GRIDSERVE locations, the sites are not currently displayed in the Shell App.
Drivers can use the GRIDSERVE website or charging map to find a suitable location before travelling. GRIDSERVE also confirms that compatible RFID cards can be used to initiate charging on its network. Find a GRIDSERVE charger.
Business customers only
This arrangement is currently available to eligible business customers. It does not apply to private or consumer Shell accounts.
Four locations are currently excluded
Shell cards cannot currently be used at the following GRIDSERVE locations:
- Roadchef Durham
- Roadchef Chester
- Mollie’s Bristol
- Centaurus Retail Park
Drivers visiting these four locations will need to use an alternative payment method.
Network participation can change, so we recommend checking the latest coverage before beginning a journey.
How to charge at a GRIDSERVE Electric Highwaysite
Using your Shell card at a participating GRIDSERVE Electric Highway charging location is straightforward:
- Park beside a suitable charger.
- Follow the instructions shown on the charger screen.
- Tap your physical Shell card on the RFID reader.
- Connect the charging cable securely to the vehicle.
- Confirm that the charging session has started before leaving the vehicle.
- When charging is complete, follow the on-screen instructions to end the session.
The transaction will then be included within your business account and invoicing, subject to the terms and pricing of your Shell card agreement.
Why this matters for fleet customers
Public charging availability remains one of the biggest considerations for businesses moving towards electric vehicles. Drivers need dependable chargers in convenient locations, while fleet managers need visibility and control over charging expenditure.
Adding GRIDSERVE to the Shell Recharge network delivers several important benefits.
Reduced driver downtime
GRIDSERVE has an extensive range of high-power chargers designed to get compatible vehicles back on the road quickly.
Actual charging speed will depend on the charger, vehicle, battery temperature and current state of charge.
Better motorway coverage
Many GRIDSERVE chargers are positioned at motorway service areas and other important travel locations, making them well suited to drivers completing longer business journeys.
Simple payment
Instead of drivers paying with personal bank cards and submitting expense claims, eligible charging transactions can be managed through the business Shell account.
Easy admin
Shell positions its business card as a way to manage fuel and EV charging through one card and one invoice, helping mixed fleets simplify their administration. Learn more about the Shell Card Range.
Greater flexibility
Drivers now have even more choice when planning their journeys. GRIDSERVE joins other participating charging operators available through the extensive Shell Recharge roaming network.
Support for fleet electrification
Reliable public charging makes it easier for businesses to introduce electric cars and vans without limiting where their drivers can travel.
One card for mixed fleets
For businesses running electric vehicles alongside traditional diesel and petrol vehicles, the Shell Hybrid Card provides a practical way to bring different vehicle costs together.
Depending on your card configuration, drivers can use one business card for fuel and participating EV charging locations. Fleet managers benefit from clearer transaction records and consolidated invoicing, reducing the need to manage multiple suppliers, applications and driver expense claims.
This can be particularly valuable while a business is gradually transitioning its fleet to electric vehicles.
Helping make EV charging easier
At Fleetmaxx Solutions, our aim is to make running an electric or mixed fleet as straightforward as possible.
The addition of more than 200 GRIDSERVE locations gives our Shell EV card customers greater confidence when travelling across the UK. With more than 1,500 high-power charging bays available, drivers have more opportunities to recharge conveniently and continue their journeys.
If you already have an eligible Shell Recharge Card, Shell Hybrid Card or Shell CRT EV Card, there is no additional card to order. Simply take your physical RFID card to a participating GRIDSERVE location and follow the instructions on the charger.
