Esso a rich history in the UK

Esso, origins and early years

At Fleetmaxx Solutions, we take pride in offering Esso fuel cards that provide businesses across the UK with convenience, savings, and reliability. Behind every fuel card we offer lies a fascinating history of innovation and resilience, dating back to the establishment of their predecessor, the Anglo American Oil Company, in 1888.

Esso’s story began as the Anglo American Oil Company, founded in 1888 as the first foreign affiliate of John D. Rockefeller’s renowned Standard Oil Trust. Headquartered at Bishopsgate, London, with a depot in Purfleet, Essex, they initially focused on storing and distributing paraffin imported from New York to illuminate lamps across England.

Pioneering growth and expansion

Just a year later, Esso expanded into bulk distribution of refined petroleum products in the UK, leveraging steam tanker vessels like the ‘Bayonne’ and ‘Manhattan’ to import oils from America. By 1890, they secured a significant site at Broad Pill, Avonmouth, where it constructed oil storage tanks and commenced supplying gas oil for town gas manufacture by 1892.

Innovation and evolution

Esso’s commitment to innovation continued with the introduction of ‘Pratt’s Petroleum’, named after Charles Pratt of Standard Oil, and the establishment of a national operating network by 1900. As the demand for motor fuel grew, they adapted, importing 14 million gallons annually by the start of World War I in 1914.

Contribution to british petroleum infrastructure

Post-war, the company made significant contributions to British petroleum infrastructure, installing the UK’s first kerbside petrol pump in Hale, Cheshire, and acquiring the British-Mexican Petroleum Co. Ltd in 1925. The iconic Esso brand was launched in the United States in 1926 and introduced in the UK in 1934, consolidating all fuel brands under the Esso name by 1935.

Endurance and innovation during wartime

During World War II, Esso’s tanker fleet played a critical role in maintaining UK fuel supplies, with operations like Operation PLUTO supplying petroleum for the D-Day landings. Despite bombing damage to its Purfleet terminal, they remained operational, symbolizing resilience and commitment during wartime challenges.

Continued growth and modernisation

In 1949, they embarked on constructing the UK’s largest refinery at Fawley, officially opened by Prime Minister Clement Atlee in 1951. This refinery quickly became a cornerstone of Esso’s operations, refining 124,000 barrels daily by its first year and expanding into petrochemicals in 1958.

Innovation in distribution and services

Esso’s commitment to innovation continued with milestones like delivering ethylene via pipeline from Fawley to Severnside in 1962 and collaborating with Shell on North Sea exploration in the mid-1960s. The introduction of self-service petrol stations in 1969 and convenience-focused initiatives like Esso shops further enhanced customer experience.

Exxon Mobil era and beyond

In 1972, Esso’s parent company, Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), rebranded as Exxon Corporation, marking a new chapter in its global presence. By 1977, Esso refined over four million tons of North Sea crude at Fawley, supporting UK energy needs with projects like the FLAGS pipeline.
