Help to drive more economically

Fuel efficient driving: An article by Steve Buckley, Sales Manager, Fleetmaxx Solutions Burnley

For many people, cutting down on car use simply is not practical. Whether it is commuting to work, running a business, or managing everyday life, driving remains essential. However, there are still plenty of ways to make the fuel you buy go further, helping you save money while also reducing emissions.

Fuel economy is influenced by far more than just the price at the pump. The condition of your vehicle, the routes you choose, and even small changes in driving style can all make a noticeable difference to how much fuel you use.

Even the smallest adjustments can build into meaningful savings over time.

Here are some practical fuel efficient driving tips and advice brought to you in conjunction with our friends at Esso.

Fuel efficient driving: Low tyre pressure uses more fuel

Vehicle maintenance is something many drivers push down the priority list until a warning light flashes up or something goes wrong. However, a few simple checks can make a surprisingly big difference to both your fuel economy and the overall health of your vehicle. One of the easiest and most effective is keeping your tyres inflated to the correct pressure.

Fuel efficient driving starts with reducing unnecessary strain on your vehicle. Tyres that are underinflated create more rolling resistance on the road, meaning your engine has to work harder to keep the vehicle moving. More effort from the engine means more fuel being burned.

In fact, tyres running just 6 PSI below the recommended pressure can increase fuel consumption by around 3 percent. Across the UK, underinflated tyres are estimated to cost motorists hundreds of millions of pounds every year in wasted fuel.

Research commissioned by Esso also found that only 52 percent of drivers check their tyre pressure when a warning light appears, while one in five people admitted they do not feel confident using a tyre pump at home or at a filling station.

Keeping your tyres properly inflated is one of the simplest fuel efficient driving habits you can adopt. Correct tyre pressure can help:

  • improve fuel economy
  • reduce tyre wear
  • improve handling and braking
  • make journeys safer
  • lower running costs

Many drivers are surprised to learn that tyres naturally lose pressure over time, typically around 2 PSI every month. That is why regular checks are important, especially before long journeys or heavy motorway driving.

A quick tyre pressure check only takes a few minutes, but it could help your fuel tank stretch much further while also making your vehicle safer and more efficient on the road
