EV growth is reshaping fleet strategy: What transport businesses need to know

EV Growth an update by Steve Clarke, Marketing Manager, Fleetmaxx Solutions

As the marketing manager at Fleetmaxx Solutions, I’ve had a front-row seat to one of the biggest transitions our industry has seen in decades: the shift to electric vehicles (EVs). Shell’s recent insights, shared by Euan Moir, head of fleet solutions UK, highlight how this EV growth is not just changing what powers our vehicles—but how fleet managers think, plan, and invest.

EV growth and shifting fleet attitudes

Shell is witnessing a continued increase in EV customers. According to Moir, this is largely thanks to improved charging infrastructure and greater confidence among fleet operators. With more chargers being installed across the country, the perceived risks around range anxiety and downtime are steadily reducing.

However, Moir also pointed out that the path to electrification is rarely straightforward. Traditional fuel prices remain competitive, which can delay decision-making for fleet operators looking at cost-efficiency and ROI. It’s a balancing act between futureproofing operations and maintaining profit margins in the short term.

Test and learn: a new mindset

Rather than fully committing to a rapid EV transition, many fleet managers are embracing a ‘test and learn’ approach. This enables them to better understand total cost of ownership (TCO), including vehicle investment, fuelling costs, and charging options.

Moir noted that “TCO is at the heart of the EV discussion”—and rightly so. Fleet managers must consider whether they’re able to implement home charging, depot infrastructure, or rely on public and semi-public solutions. These practical decisions directly impact both operational costs and efficiency.

Infrastructure challenges still remain

While EV growth continues, Moir explained that infrastructure gaps persist, especially outside the South and South East. Fleets in the North, Midlands, and Western regions still report difficulties finding adequate charging support.

Shell’s continued investment into its Shell Recharge network is a response to this need. Fleetmaxx customers using the Shell Recharge, Shell EV CRT, and Shell Hybrid fuel cards benefit from this infrastructure, helping to close the gap and make long-distance EV logistics more viable.

Moir also emphasised the importance of ease of use and accessibility, referencing European-style interoperability as a positive model. Partnerships across providers could enhance the UK’s network and accelerate the EV transition.

Clarity on the ICE ban supports EV growth

The UK government’s announcement reaffirming the 2030 ban on new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles has given fleets more clarity on future expectations. Moir commented that, despite the disruptions change can bring, this clarity is essential for long-term planning.

Shell is using its international experience—particularly from EV-forward markets like the Netherlands—to support UK businesses in decarbonising their fleets. That global perspective, paired with local expertise, is proving valuable.

Data and education drive better decisions

Moir urged fleet managers to get granular with their data. What vehicles are in use today? What are the routes, operational hours, load types? These insights help shape a phased and logical transition to electric.

A realistic goal, such as switching 20% of a fleet to EV within 12 months, allows for measurable progress. It also highlights what models, infrastructure, or training are needed to make that change stick.

Another key point Moir raised was the importance of education. Dispelling EV myths—from charging fears to vehicle safety—can make or break adoption. Involving drivers and operational staff in the process is crucial for success.

Confidently navigating the bumps in the road

“There will always be bumps along the way,” Moir concluded. And he’s right. But with the right guidance, flexible strategies, and reliable partners, fleet operators can face those bumps with confidence.

At Fleetmaxx Solutions, we’re here to provide exactly that kind of support. Whether it’s through our expert team, Shell’s expanding infrastructure, or our comprehensive suite of EV fuel cards, we’re helping our customers navigate this energy transition smoothly.
