One of the most common questions I’m asked by fleet managers is surprisingly simple: “How much AdBlue® should my vehicles be using?”

The answer matters more than many people realise. Using the correct amount of AdBlue  in relation to diesel consumption isn’t just about keeping vehicles running. It plays a key role in emissions compliance, vehicle performance, and demonstrating good fleet management practice if you’re ever inspected.

For commercial operators, especially those working towards or maintaining FORS accreditation, monitoring AdBlue usage and keeping clear records should be part of everyday fleet control.

Why AdBlue usage ratios matter

Modern Euro 6 diesel vehicles rely on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to reduce harmful NOx emissions. AdBlue® is essential to that process, and when it’s used correctly, emissions are significantly reduced.

As a general guide, most vehicles consume around 3–10% AdBlue® compared to diesel usage, with around 5% being typical for commercial fleets. That means roughly 3–10 litres of AdBlue for every 100 litres of diesel.

If your ratio falls well outside this range, it can indicate:

• A mechanical or SCR system issue

• Poor driving patterns

• Incorrect refilling practices

• Or, in more serious cases, potential system interference

All of these are red flags during audits or roadside checks.

How much AdBlue to use? Start with the manufacturer’s guidance

The most accurate place to begin is always your vehicle manufacturer’s guidelines. Your vehicle handbook will tell you:

• Expected AdBlue® consumption rates

• Tank capacity

• Refill requirements

This gives you a baseline so you can compare real-world usage against what’s expected.

Monitor AdBlue® levels proactively

Most modern commercial vehicles are fitted with dashboard warnings or gauges that show AdBlue® levels. These alerts should never be ignored.

If AdBlue® runs too low, vehicles may:

• Enter reduced-power or “limp” mode

• Refuse to restart once switched off

From an operational point of view, that’s downtime you don’t need. From a compliance perspective, it raises questions about vehicle checks and maintenance routines.

Calculate usage against diesel consumption

Monitoring AdBlue on its own only tells half the story. The real insight comes when you compare AdBlue® usage directly against diesel consumption.

This ratio-based approach allows fleet managers to:

• Confirm vehicles are operating within expected parameters

• Quickly identify anomalies

• Evidence good control of emissions systems

For commercial organisations, this level of monitoring is increasingly seen as best practice, particularly where compliance and sustainability are concerned.

Record keeping: good practice and compliance protection

Keeping clear records of your AdBlue-to-diesel ratios per vehicle is more important than ever. During audits or investigations, authorities may ask you to demonstrate how you manage emissions-related systems across your fleet.

Both DVSA inspections and FORS audits can involve questions around vehicle condition, maintenance, and emissions control.
