This is one of the most common questions I hear from fleet operators who want to reduce emissions without changing vehicles. If you are considering a move to HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), the answer is straightforward. Yes, you still need AdBlue when running on HVO.
HVO changes the fuel you put in the tank. It does not change how your vehicle controls emissions.
Why HVO does not replace AdBlue
Most modern vans, trucks, and cars are fitted with a Selective Catalytic Reduction system, particularly Euro 6 vehicles.
These systems rely on AdBlue to treat nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gases. Whether the engine is running on standard diesel or HVO, the SCR system still needs AdBlue to operate correctly.
HVO helps reduce carbon emissions at combustion. AdBlue works further down the exhaust system, cleaning gases before they leave the vehicle. They perform different roles and one does not replace the other.
What happens if AdBlue runs out on HVO powered vehicle
Running out of AdBlue on HVO has exactly the same consequences as running out on standard diesel.
Drivers will see warning lights, experience reduced engine power, and in some cases face a non start condition. From a compliance perspective, this also creates risk during roadside checks or audits.
HVO does not bypass emissions systems and it does not remove the requirement for AdBlue.
